The LIFE BIOGASNET project was presented, by partners from the University of Cádiz, in the ExpoBAC held as part of the XV Annual Congress of Biotechnology (BAC) celebrated from 13th – 15th of July in the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain).
Sandra Torres Herrera, project partner PhD student at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Food Technology of University of Cádiz (UCA), participated in different sessions of the congress, presenting two posters and delivering an oral presentation, based on some of the work done within the LIFE BIOGASNET project.
The first poster presented, titled “Kinetics of ammonium and nitrite removal by nitrifying biomass adapted to landfill leachate”, exposes the respirometry tests carried out in the laboratory with the samples obtained from the reactor installed in the Cádiz pilot site. The aim of this work was to quantify the nitritation and nitratation rates at different ammonium and nitrite concentrations, respectively, of nitrifying biomass fed with landfill leachate using respirometric methods.
On the other hand, she presented the poster “Optimization of biogenic sulfur flocculation from an anoxic desulfurization bioreactor”, which details some of the work done as part of the project with the objective to integrate the desulfurization process with a nitrification process. Finally, this work was also explained in an oral presentation delivered by Sandra Torres during the ExpoBAC session of the event.
The event, organised by the Association of Biotechnologists of the Valencian Community (ABiVa) and the Spanish Federation of Biotechnologists (FEBiotec), included a programme with plenty of networking sessions, training courses and research presentations, among others. The Annual Congress of Biotechnology (BAC) brought together students, professionals and researchers of the fields of biotechnology and biosciences.
