Intellectual Property Protection

The LIFE BIOGASNET project has successfully developed and tested a cost-effective and environmentally friendly biological technology for the conditioning of biogas, a valuable and sustainable energy source. The product resulting from this research is a highly innovative technology that allows the simultaneous purification of biogas and either industrial wastewater or industrial waste gases through a robust and inexpensive process that also leads to the production of different high-added value compounds that can be used as fertilizers or as raw materials in industry.
This document details the steps taken to try to protect the BIOGASNET technology and, if necessary, define possible intellectual property protection agreements between the project partners.
A search for published material related to BIOGASNET technology was carried out as a starting point to evaluate the possible application for a patent or similar. Once this document had been prepared, a patentability study was commissioned to a specialized company. The results of the patentability study showed that the BIOGASNET technology was difficult to patent, due to the existing publications in international journals. Therefore, the consortium decided not to apply for such a patent and to try to protect the prior knowledge through other protection systems.

This document contains the following:
● The search document of published material, as well as the information regarding the BIOGASNET technology to be patented (with the corresponding claims).
● The patentability report made by an external company.

● The agreements reached by the partners regarding the intellectual property and exploitation rights of the technology.
